This year marks a significant milestone for The Vindolanda Trust, which was established on April 1, 1970. Looking back over 54 years of growth and archaeological discovery, it is hard to imagine that the Trust began with modest assets: a 13-acre ‘camp field,’ a small garden shed for tool storage, a handful of picks and wheelbarrows, and just £21 in the bank.
From these humble beginnings, The Vindolanda Trust has evolved into an internationally renowned archaeological site and research center. The aerial photograph of Vindolanda today showcases the extensive excavation areas and structured layouts that were, decades ago, hidden beneath the earth. Each stone and pathway seen from above tells a story of relentless pursuit and dedication to uncovering the lives of those who once walked these grounds.
The Trust’s journey has been supported by a dedicated community consisting of staff, volunteers, and visitors. Each year, people from all over the world come to Vindolanda, drawn by its rich history and the ongoing promise of new discoveries. The success of the Trust has always relied heavily on this community.
