Tona González Karlsson was the woman who changed the lives of these dogs. Yari was rescued years ago, and despite being an older chihuahua mix, their age difference did not hinder their bond. For years, these beautiful furry friends were the best of companions and unconditional friends. Unfortunately, the years took a toll on Pepper's health, and Yari had to say goodbye to her best friend last month. Karlsson shared, "Pepper was always demanding with other dogs, but they fit together. Eventually, they started playing and hugging. It was so funny because now, when Yari plays with big dogs, she plays as if she were a chihuahua."
Yari and Pepper enjoyed years of great adventures where happiness was always present. Yari always looked up to her older brother. Karlsson said, "Yari would kiss him and show her excitement every time he came back. She always wanted to be with Pepper. Sometimes, she would howl if she wasn't in the same room as him, but they were almost always together. There literally were never any problems between them. It seemed like they loved and understood each other."
Unfortunately, as Pepper grew older, his health declined. Yari seemed to sense that something was wrong and that her best friend was suffering. She tried to comfort him and was always by his side, not as a partner for new adventures, but to alleviate his pain. Karlsson shared, "Whenever Pepper was sick or after he came home from the hospital, Yari knew to be calm around him. She just wanted to comfort him as much as she did for me. There was a time when Pepper was sick while I was asleep, and Yari would wake me up and look at him in a way that let me know something was wrong."
Pepper began to suffer from various terminal illnesses, and his adoptive mother couldn't ignore his suffering. Finally, Karlsson made the heartbreaking decision to end his pain and help him cross the rainbow bridge. She said, "The day before he passed away, he stopped eating completely. Yari simply lay down with him, caressed him, and kissed him. We put him to sleep at my parents' house. Pepper was so sick that day that I had to carry him."
Incredibly, just half an hour before the veterinarian arrived, Pepper got up and walked to the grave that Karlsson's father had dug. It was as if he wanted to say goodbye to his family. In his final breath, Yari approached and gently caressed him. Pepper now rested in peace, his body laid to rest on the ground and covered with lavender and garden flowers. It was at that moment that Yari realized her loyal friend was no longer there. Karlsson shared, "She looked into the grave, and obviously, I don't know what she was thinking, but she must have known he was there. She lay down next to his grave, and she looked so sad, as if she was embracing the earth. She stayed there for a while."
With the absence of her best friend, Yari's behavior completely changed. The once happy and energetic dog seemed to fade without her companion's presence. To uplift her spirits, Karlsson took her to visit the grave at her parents' house. She said, "I took her to visit the grave at my parents' house. She was so happy and secure, sniffing the earth."
Yari spent five years sharing her life with her best friend. Now, whenever she misses him, Karlsson takes her to his grave, one of her favorite places.
