Elephants don't sleep much and they make loud noises when they eat. Here's what you'll see for yourself after spending the night in one of the "Jungle Bubbles" of Anantara Golden Triangle Camping and Resort in Chiang Rai, Thailand .

The two Thai bubble houses are exactly transparent domes surrounding the resting space, flanked by a fenced-in area - home to three elephants rescued and cared for by the Asian Elephant Foundation. Golden Triangle (GTAEF).

The bubbles are located just a few meters from the elephant cage.

Visitors can sit and watch these female elephants play with deliberately placed toys on tree branches. Their powerful proboscis occasionally rips through bark and breaks branches, making noises at night.

Thai bubble house - once in a lifetime experience

The bubbles are an experience beyond your booked resort room, for 17,700 baht (nearly 12 million VND) per night per couple. This means you can just bring a small bag of essentials and leave the rest of your luggage in your room.

Guests are picked up from the lobby just before sunset, then ride a jeep down a dirt road before taking a short walk through the resort's rice fields to the Thai bubble house.

Immediately upon arrival, staff will deliver you an evening picnic basket, filled with bread and other deli items. You will sit and sip your food while watching the elephants enjoy their meal. However, visitors need to strictly follow the policy of not touching elephants and not feeding them at will.

Each Thai bubble house offers a 22 square meter resting space, with air conditioning and a small self-contained toilet with shower. The interior is quite simple but luxurious, including a large comfortable bed for two, a pair of chairs and a small table. There is no TV here, because the elephants are the "stars" of this show.

Sleep-sensitive people will find this experience of sleeping next to an elephant in Thailand particularly eerie. On moonlit nights, you may have trouble sleeping because you can feel the change of light as the moon passes through the bubble. That is also the reason why the resort carefully equips visitors with eye masks.

Elephants in captivity sleep only 4-6 hours a day, so you'll hear all sorts of interesting sounds throughout the night, even being curious enough to wake up to peek at what they're doing.

The bed has a curtain around it, giving you the privacy you need because early in the morning someone will bring food to the elephants.

The idea for the Thai bubble house came from Gaudéric Harang, the resort's senior manager. He said he always wants to go beyond the mold to bring a unique experience to visitors. In addition to safety concerns, these “rainforest bubbles” must meet very high standards.

“As a premier resort, we have to make sure the experience is extremely value for money and at the level that guests expect,” he explains. After the Thai bubble house was erected, Harang was the first to try there, feeling everything like a real customer.

“Due to being in the north of Thailand, we are fortunate to have a more diverse climate than the rest of the country. Winter here is short but very cold. When the bubble house was finally ready to serve in December, the temperature was 6 degrees Celsius early in the morning and I was about to freeze!”, Harang said. “There is no heater. In addition, the humidity in the forest is high, so the bubble house is very humid at night. I woke up at 3 a.m., drenched and freezing cold.”

From Harang's initial experience, the Thai bubble house is equipped with air conditioners, heaters and dehumidifiers to ensure the comfort of visitors in all four seasons.
